English language, as of today, has come to be known as the global language of the world. And apt it is, as the language almost single handedly, links the entire globe together. It is an international language as more than sixty percent of the world population can communicate in the language. The language truly has become the unofficial language of the world. Look around and you most certainly would find something or the other that is written in the English language.

Most developing economies give the importance and due respect that the language deserves. The language has got such huge acceptance that children are encouraged to learn it from a very young age, even if it isn’t their native language. English has great importance in the global education scenario as well. For the purpose of distance learning or even attending colleges abroad, English is the medium of instruction. Exams that test an individual’s knowledge of English like TOEFL and IELTS are getting increasingly popular. The importance that the language holds is signified through this.

Globalization has reduced boundaries and English as a language has helped in it hugely. Today, it isn’t a great deal to travel to another part of the world for the purpose of education, business or even for tourism. Under such scenarios, where earlier it might have been difficult to communicate; English is today the mode of conversation. In countries where there are many local languages, apart from the official language, English is considered the most apt language and is used widely.

Not just travelling, but even if you are indoors, and logged on to the World Wide Web, English is the language that you come across. While the web does provide the option of lots of other languages, it is English which is set as the default language for most websites. So is the case in social networking websites which are meant to connect the people from different corners of the world.

English is also the language which is used for official purposes. It is the language of correspondence among the leaders of various nations. At global summits, even though there might be translators and interpreters, English is again considered the language which most people know. In the corporate world, a good communication skill in English puts one at a much higher level than their peers. It is one of the basic prerequisites to rise up the corporate ladder.

English today has brought the kind of connection that no other language had made possible. The language has shrunk the world. Today knowing English is also considered as a status symbol as it easily opens more opportunities for the person. It opens one’s mind to a new culture, economy and is considered to open new horizons. It thereby boosts an individual’s self confidence and contributes to a stronger personality. Knowing the language, doesn’t mean that you are disregarding your native language or getting ‘westernized’, it just makes you smart, educated and definitely opens up lots more opportunities.
